2:00-3:00 pm – A View from the Hill, Jeff Bush

speaker

A VIEW FROM THE HILL
With Jeff Bush

Since colonial days, Americans have doggedly committed themselves to establishing a tax system that both benefits the country and is fair to the taxpayers. If you think that over the past 240-plus years of this pursuit, Americans haven’t tried some incarnation of just about every taxing strategy, you really need to brush up on your history. In his latest book, The Great American Experiment: Evolution of U.S. Taxation, Jeff Bush helps us remember that history. What you’ll find is that in the world of taxation, eventually, everything old is new again. But what if this time, rather than repeat the mistakes of our past, we learned from our successes and failures and used that wisdom to craft a new ideal in U.S. taxation? That just might lead us to the fair and effective tax system we’ve been striving to achieve since our nation’s founding.

Machine Platform Crowd: Harnessing Our Digital Future
With Andy McAfee

We live in strange times. A machine plays the strategy game Go better than any human; upstarts like Apple and Google destroy industry stalwarts such as Nokia; strangers on the Internet are repeatedly more innovative than corporate research labs. And these are not the crowning achievements of the second machine age; they're the warmup acts. Over the next 10 years tech progress will bring more business change and disruption than we've seen in the past 50. MIT’s Andrew McAfee knows what it takes to master this digital-powered shift: he insists that we must rethink the integration of minds and machines, of products and platforms, and of the core and the crowd. In all three cases, the balance now favors the second element of the pair, with massive implications for how we run our companies and live our lives.

Industry Trends Shaping Financial Advice
With Michael Kitces

The recent rise of the "robo-advisor" has called into question the relevance of financial advisors and the viability of current advisory business models. Yet the reality is that technology "disrupting" financial advisor business models isn't new, and has actually happened repeatedly over the past several decades... forcing advisors to adapt and move up the value chain, or be left behind. In this session, we look at how technology is once again driving major changes in the business model of financial advisors, driving a Great Convergence across historically-separate industry channels, triggering a Crisis of Differentiation, a Search for New Business Models, and rising pressure on improving the Client Experience. And in the coming years, these trends will only be accelerated, as the consumers of financial planning - and financial planners themselves - shift from Baby Boomers, to the Gen X and Millennial generations that, as "digital natives", will expect and demand advisors to both leverage technology, and add value on top!

    4. Speaking the Language – Growth of Women Investors, Gretchen Halpin

speaker

SPEAKING THE LANGUAGE – GROWTH OF WOMEN INVESTORS
With Gretchen Halpin

Women investors have been growing at an astronomical pace over the last decade, but many advisory firms are still acting like it is only a man’s world. Experienced financial advisors have seen the rise in private client services, the need for a personal approach to the business and how they can connect with this global market that is predicted to reach a staggering $18 trillion by 2018. Being strategic about focusing on this changing consumer economy is imperative for firms to continue to grow their business. Gretchen Halpin will discuss how firms can capitalize and grow their client base of women if they focus on being relatable, speaking their language and offering them solutions that connect with what matters most to their lives. She will outline strategies on how to create a micro-market and serve that market well, especially since all women are not the same. Many women need to make sure they are proactive in educating themselves about their finances, especially with variables such as: being underpaid, having an interrupted work history, longer average lifespan, and transition planning (divorce, widower, etc.). At the end of the day, a strong advisor should strategically lead their clients, male or female, to invest in themselves, save for their future and take control of their goals.

    5. The Fiduciary Standard of Care, Erika Young

speaker

THE FIDUCIARY STANDARD OF CARE
With Erika Young

Whether it is a national legislation requiring firms to adhere to a certain standard or just a company's business philosophy, there is no denying that the last year has brought a huge uptick in public awareness of the word "fiduciary" and what that could mean for the investment world. Erika Young will discuss what it means to have a Fiduciary Standard of Care, expand on the importance of a fiduciary-focused business and how this seeps into more than just a regulatory responsibility. She will specifically focus on the retirement plan space, how the Department of Labor ruling has affected (or will affect the industry) and what to do if you don't have resources to plan it forward to your clients who might need the help retiring. Being a fiduciary and having a 401(k) element to your practice can not only be a good diversifier for your business, but can help business clients appreciate that you're helping them protect their assets and is also making a difference in people's lives where people actually need it.

Behind the Scenes Photographs from the White House and Beyond

speaker

Pete Souza
Chief Official White House Photographer for President Obama

From eyewitness to history maker, Pete Souza provides behind-the-scenes photographs from the White House and beyond. Pete Souza was the Chief Official White House Photographer for President Obama and President Reagan. During Obama’s eight years as president, Pete took close to two million photographs. To truly document both of the president’s lives, Pete would take on the responsibility of attending every meeting the president was a part of, all the time. It was important for him to capture the president not just as a leader, but as a human being. In addition to the national political scene, Pete has covered stories around the world. After 9/11, he was among the first journalists to cover the fall of Kabul, Afghanistan, after crossing the Hindu Kush mountains by horseback in three feet of snow. Pete has lectured many times on his photography including at the Smithsonian Museum of American History, Harvard University, Boston University, and has appeared on ABC’s 20-20. Dateline NBC, CBS Sunday Morning, NBC Nightly News, Fox News Sunday, and Fox Friends and Family.
